Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I love singing – can I join?

A: Yes, absolutely! We would be delighted if you would join us. We have vacancies in all parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass).

Q: Do I have to pass an audition?

A: No, we do not have any auditions. If you are willing to learn, and have an awareness of what those around you are singing, we’re confident  you’ll pick the rest up as you go along.

Q: Where do you rehearse?

A: Our weekly rehearsals take place at Our Lady of the Rosary School,  Park Avenue, Staines-upon-Thames, TW18 2EF. We start promptly at 7:30pm and finish two hours later.

Q: That sounds like a lot of hard work, doesn’t it?

A: Not really – the time flies when you’re enjoying singing in a group. We do have a 15-minute tea/coffee-break in there too.

Q: Can I turn up by car?

A: Yes, the school has ample parking.

Q: Is this really EVERY Monday evening?

A: You should strive to attend all rehearsals: your contribution really counts! If you miss one or two rehearsals in a term, this generally isn’t a problem; the Rehearsal Schedule should assist you in catching up with what pieces of practice you missed. Higher rates of absence should be discussed with your Part Rep., who should in any case be notified of absences.

Q: Sorry, what’s a “Part Rep.”?

A: Each of the four Parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) has a Representative who is a member of the Committee which runs the Society; the Rep is your first port of call for most organisational queries you may have, and forms a vital link between the whole membership and the Committee.

Q: Who is the Committee?

A: The Committee is a set of around a dozen singers who have volunteered to take on the extra commitment of helping to run the Society; they are elected at our AGM which is held each November. The Musical Director is also an ex officio member of the Committee.

Q: What does it cost to be a member of Spelthorne Choral Society?

A: Our annual subscription is £195 (£165 for unwaged members). The completion of a Gift Aid declaration by taxpayers helps your subscription go even further.

Q: £195? That sounds a lot, doesn’t it?

A: Not really! It is far less costly than most Adult Education evening classes, and covers four concerts and about fifty rehearsals led by a professional conductor and professional pianist. The subscriptions also pay for hire of the hall and vocal scores. We collect subscriptions at one go in the first few weeks of term to save administration all round.

Full details of current subscription rates and payment options can be found on the Join Us page.
